Short Sonnet
This is sonnet I wrote that goes along quite nicely with my Short Story #2 Ahem....
Twirling
dresses spiral about
Partners
prancing hand in hand
Weaving,
gliding in and out
Then
so quietly, we all stand
I
saunter to the back of the room
Staring
silently at people’s feet
The
soon to be bride and soon to be groom
In
the middle of the floor chance to meet
The
masks hide them in a disguise
The
sun has started to sink
You
can tell by the look in their eyes
What
each one of them has begun to think
The
boy thinks thoughts of her blushing red
Her
eyes glint in the limited light
The
girl thinks of being wed
He
reaches over and holds her tight
Her
eyes travel up to meet his gaze
He
takes her out to start a dance
The
night went by in a wonderful haze
Everyone
could tell it was love at first glance
They
danced and spun all the night
Everything
was perfect and right

Short Story #2
Love at first sight are the words I've heard my older sisters repeat over and over to me. 'Lydia you'll just know it when you find the right boy! It'll be love at first sight! Oh Lydia when I saw Hank it was love at first sight! Lydia I'm sure you'll find a nice boy at the ball tonight and it'll be love at first sight!' All my life I've been waiting to go to this ball to supposedly meet the man of my dreams. The thing is though, I don't believe in love at first sight.
The lights flickered yellow, pink, green, and orange. Dresses swirl about giving the entire room a fairy like appearance. The silver black and gold mask I'm wearing sits right under my brow and covers half of my face, sweeping down to my chin. My bustle is too tight and I'm having a hard time taking in deep breathes but I smile despite of it. My older sister is quickly surrounded by a mob of adoring young men who begin to argue over who gets to have the first dance with her. It's always like that. Everyone flocks to my sister so they don't notice me slid out of their conglomerate mass.
Keeping my head held high like my mother taught me, I flounce towards the other side of the party to where there are chairs. I quickly situate myself to look like I am very busy fixing my tight pinchy shoes. After around an hour or so of pretending to be busy I give up and just sit in my chair looking at the floor. Polished shoes flit in and out of my vision and soon blur into a mass of jumbled colors. Tears trickle down my face and onto my lap. I quickly wipe them away, mentally kicking myself for letting the loneliness get to me.
A pair of shiny black shoes stop right in front of me. Hoping for the best I lift up my head and instantly know what my sisters mean by love at first sight. His hair is the color of almonds and his eyes, oh his eyes are an intense blue. Being the sensible girl that I am I waited for him to speak first. (okay actually I was in total awe of him and could think of nothing to say that would be worthy of him)
He smoothly asked," Would you like to dance?"
I answered in my high nervous voice," Yeah, sure I'd love to."
He grinned and held his hand out for me to take. I happily slid my hand into his and we spent the rest of the night dancing and laughing. We talked of so many different things that I don't even remember half of them. The night was wonderful and marvelous and exactly how I had dreamed it would be. No, actually it was even better then I had dreamed it to be because it is real. The funny thing is, now I believe in love at first sight.

New Word!
I learned a new word today! It's vertigo. It means when you feel like you're falling but you're not. Like when you're in bed and freak out because in your dream you're falling. Then you find yourself on the ground and you feel really dumb. . . you're not alone!

Short Story #1
I scream and lash out at the man that has hold of my arm. I try to find his face so I can give him an awful bloody nose. That'll teach him to mess with me! I cry out as he wrenches my other arm up behind my back. He roughly clamps his hand over my mouth and crushes me in his vice like grip. He squeezes me and I fight to breathe. He pushes the air right out of me and I can't seem to get anymore in. Spots dance in front of my eyes as i try to gasp for air. My vision gets blurry then suddenly, everything goes black.
I wake up lying on some sort of wooden floor with my head smarting really bad. Little half clad feet stand in a semi circle around me. I tilt my head up and stare at their dirty, tear stained faces. Their wide eyes blink at me curiously. I try to stand up but the floor is slick... and it's not water. The stench is unbearable. Nausea over comes me and I crawl over to a corner and empty my stomach. The rocking motion tells me I'm on a boat.
Feebly I turn to one of the dirty little children standing huddled in the corner and ask," Where are we going?"
He boldly stepped forward and answered,"Why they'd be taking us to the New World miss. I hear we be planting rice and such but you're awful pretty so I reckon they'll sell you off to be a tobacco bride."
"Were you taken too?" I questioned.
"The rest of them were but I've been chosen to go by my family. See my family needed the money and I offered to go seeing as I was the oldest. I'll work hard out in the fields and send the money back to them."
We held eye contact both understanding that we were in the same boat. Literally and theoretically. I laid down and closed my eyes, wishing this was all just a bad dream.
